A Little Update

By charlie on 2012/02/20

I finally had the chance to read my annual report from WordPress.  A brief summary:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 22,000 times in 2011. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 8 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

That is pretty awesome or at least I thought so, but I guess I am easily entertained.  I was wondering where all the traffic came from and here is the review of my top 5:

  1. stumbleupon.com
  2. etsygiveaways.blogspot.com
  3. craftgawker.com
  4. lorianderson-beadsoupblogparty.blogspot.com
  5. facebook.com

I really was shocked to see StumbleUpon as my top referrer as I just started using the social application this past year. There at the bottom of the list is Facebook.  Wow!   To keep the energy going on the social netorking sites, I decided to make my site more social network friendly:

Social Media Plugins, WordPress plugins, Slick Social Share Buttons Plugin, WordPress social media plugin, wordpress plugin, social connect, comment with social media site, Link Within, IGIT Related Post With Thumb

You will now find on all my post two new features:

  1. A Sliding Share It Toolbar on the left side of the page courtesy of the Slick Social Share Buttons Plugin.  This was so easy to install!  I highly recommend it.
  2. A way to login with social media sites to comment on my blog courtesy of the Social Connect Plugin.

Lastly, I revisited an old feature, the Similar Articles feature that used to be operated by Link Within.   I didn’t particularly care that the plugin was hosted on an external server.  To replace the feature I installed IGIT Related Post With Thumb, you have a bit more control over the look of the widget and it is all internal.

Valentine’s Challenge Revealed

By charlie on 2012/02/17

When I saw Michelle Mach’s Valentine’s Challenge, I knew that I would have to try to be a part of it!  Paper is not my forte, which was going to make it even more fun for me!  She sent me the following card:

With the card in hand, I knew that I was going to have to incorporate metal clay jewelry into it, I just didn’t know how.  I thought it would be a cool way to sell some jewelry, what guy wouldn’t want to buy the card and necklace all at once?  Heck I am not even male and I would do that :P   This is what I came up with:

Metal Clay Flower Card, Handmade Valentine's Day Card

The front features my metal clay flower pendant in bronze.  The ribbon that was used for the chain is woven in and out of the card. I added a bit of flower paper for some color and pizazz.  Then there is the inside…

Metal Clay Jewelry Card

I lined the envelope with matching paper.  The inside of the card I decided to do a pop up of the word LOVE.  If you are wondering what the card says, it is this “A flower cannot blossom without sunshine, and man cannot live without love” -Max Muller

A Pinwheel Reveal

By charlie on 2012/02/15

When I saw this roll across my RSS feed, I knew I had to give it a try…

When I saw that I would be one of the participants I knew that the deadlines would be close, but I was determined!

I ended up with the beautiful green pinwheel. Such a fun color and one that I am not usually used to using, so it was a great challenge!  Before I even got the piece I knew what I was going to do…

Jade Scott Pinwheel Challenge

You see I knew that I wanted the pinwheel front and center…I also knew that I wanted it to look like it was getting blown into…

Exhale pendant, exhale necklace, whimsical necklace

So I made an exhale connector out of german silver from which there are three beaded strands:

Shell on the bottom which represents the earth
Quartz in the middle which represents the clouds
Mookaite stars that represent the celestial and dreams

Go check out what the other participants created:

  1. Lorelei
  2. Sabine
  3. Kate Richbourg
  4. Shawna Tobias
  5. Lisa Cone
  6. Heidi of ExPostFacto

Pay It Forward

By charlie on 2012/02/13

I’m sure most of you have heard of the concept of paying it forward. Someone does something nice for you and you turn around and do something nice for someone else (without expecting anything in return). In my eyes this kind of giving is the ultimate example of good karma and the Golden Rule. And although I can be selfish at times (who isn’t?), I really do try to give from my heart when & what I can.

Which brings us to this fun little game of Pay it Forward. Great name, huh?! (By the way the movie makes me cry uncontrollably)…I learned of this little game from Niky of SilverNikNats Jewelry.
pay it forward blog game, pay it forward,

 Here’s how to play along:

  1. I’ll make something handmade for the first 3 people who comment to this post. What I make will be a surprise and will arrive to you when you least expect it. Doesn’t everyone love a surprise?
  2. I have 365 days to make and deliver it to you. But there’s a little catch, to get a handmade gift from me, you have to play too! This means you take the pledge to send something handmade to 3 of your blog readers. It doesn’t have to be a quilt, just something handmade! Easy right?
  3. In case it wasn’t obvious in #2, you have to have a blog.
  4. Once you comment here, you have to post about Pay it Forward on your blog and keep it going!

Who knows if I am feeling super generous I may send something handmade to an undetermined amount of people :P

This is one of the easiest commitments you’ll make! You can make anything you want. You have a whole year to make it and send it. Simple! Even if you aren’t one of the first 3 to comment on my post, you can still do something nice for someone else by participating on your own blog. I would love to hear about it!

Wedding Wednesday: Number 1

By charlie on 2012/02/08

Admittedly I really enjoyed reading about Stephanie’s relationship over at luxe chandelier and I figured why not join in? I know it is a bit off topic for me but just think about how much you will learn about me! Not to mention I will share with you as many of my wedding crafts as I can…I know you are asking yourself why now? Well it is our third wedding anniversary on the 7th of February and I figured Wedding Wednesday, third day of the week, it’s serendipitous so why not?

About a year out from finishing my undergraduate degree at Florida Institute of Technology, I knew it was time to get out of Florida.  My mentor at NASA Kennedy Space Center advised it, because even then there was discussions about ending the Space Shuttle program.  At the time I was working on Expendable Launch Vehicles, but I digress…Suffice it to say that I knew I was going to high tail it out of Florida as quickly as possible once I had my degree in hand.  I had offers in all kinds of places but liked New Mexico the best; who knows why since I had only been there once before.

End of May after my senior year in college, I find myself in Albuquerque with my first job!  I was excited and sad all at once…The friends and family I love so dearly was left behind on the East Coast…Me I was in the middle of the wild west wondering what I was going to do with myself.  Luckily everyone at my new place of employment was super nice, including Nick!  We quickly became friends, we went to Church together, we hiked together, and he even taught me how to ski, see…(ok so that was the recovery)

We also went on a hot air balloon ride together, something at Albuquerque is infamous for…

Our first date, which came months after starting to hang out together as friends, was just another casual dinner to the Owl Cafe, after dinner the topic came up about our relationship and if we wanted to be more than friends. We both agreed to try it…Not a very romantic first date but we still laugh about it!  None the less our courtship was mellow and full of friendship…
